Field Notes — № 01
Attention Paid, August 2026
Every short-form video HORN watched properly last month, in the order it came. What earned its two seconds, and what didn't. The ones worth stealing a mechanic from are set in black.
- 01A plumber's account, forty thousand followers, every video opening on the broken thing already in frame. No "hi guys." The fault was never the plumbing.
- 02Someone reviewing kettles, two million views on a video where the first spoken word is the last word of the title. You finish the sentence by tapping.1
- 03A charity appeal that led with the ask. I scrolled past it in my head every time. Lead with the person.
- 04Cooking video: no face, no voice, first frame is a knife already moving. Motion in frame one buys you the second second.
- 05Three "day in the life" videos, three different trades, same shape, same sound, same drone shot. The algorithm can tell. So can everyone.
- 06—
- 07A barrister explaining one legal idea per video, phone propped on a mug, lit by a window. Nine hundred thousand followers. Lighting was never the problem.
- 08An ad that put the brand name at second fourteen, not second one. I watched to the end because by then it had earned the name.
- 09A florist filming one arrangement from first stem to the bin. The decay is the hook. Nobody scrolls past a countdown.
- 10—
- 11"Storytime" videos that take nine seconds to say what would have fit in a text message.
- 12A carpenter whose captions are only the tool's name. "Mortise chisel." That is the entire style. The restraint is the brand.2
- 13A café's grand-opening reel, posted three weeks after the grand opening. The reach was there. The timing wasn't.
- 14A documentary on the attention economy I have now watched twice. Bad hook, forgiven — it is ninety minutes, not nine seconds. Short-form gets no such grace.
- 15A book on rhetoric from 1963 that is, in function, a hooks manual. It just uses older words for it.3
- 16A gym account: one rep, one cut, one caption, twelve seconds, every time. The most disciplined feed I follow.
- 17A "get ready with me" that was really a product demo. Fine — but tell me which one I'm watching by second two.
- 18Regional press, filming vertical, subtitled, first frame a face mid-sentence. Local newsrooms have quietly got good at this. Most local businesses have not.4
